WTF Hostgator?
It’s been a while since I’ve posted but I took some time off so thats why.
Anyway, I finally signed up for Hostgator today and I gotta say… So far I’m not that impressed. Actually, I’m quite irritated. I got all my confirmation emails and access information and everything but thats apparently not enough.
I get another email a few minutes later. Apparently, because my IP address is is located more than 900 miles from their servers, I needed to call and verify my account.
So I spend 20 minutes on the phone and am told that my original payment will be refunded and I will be charged again. So I log into their billing system and my initial payment shows up as possible “fraud, WTF?
Now they say that payment has been credited. Somehow I doubt that and I’m guessing I’ll be on the phone with them again because they’ve double billed me. They also told me I would need to call my credit card company to verify the refund.
I’ve been a customer of theirs for about an hour and have spent 40 minutes of that hour on the phone with them trying to resolve issues. Not a great way to start a business relationship.
I’m only pointing one of my domains to this host. I have 8 more but I think I’ll wait. I’n my 5+ years with 1 & 1 I think I’ve needed to call them twice and once was to get a backup because I screwed something up.
Just getting signed up has been a hassle so I’m not holding out much hope but who knows. I’ll give them a week, If I have to call again, I’ll cancel.

Hello,
I’m the owner of hostgator and I wanted to apologize for the trouble you’ve had so far getting signed up with us. We have anywhere from 50 to 100 guaranteed fraud orders a day.
Unfortunately because of this some orders that we receive we require more verification on. It shouldn’t take more then a few minutes to verify your account so I will need to check into this further.
Can you send me an email to brent @hostgator.com ? I’ll get everything fixed up for you and give you your first month free for the trouble.
