Why did I upgrade to Wordpress 2.5?

Monday, April 7th, 2008

Well I thought it would be cool. It’s not!
I watched the video and it looks sweet. Some of the added stuff like the gallery is very nice, Although I have to figure out how to get the thumbs  adjusted so portrait pictures don’t get chopped off at the top and bottom. Other than that it’s pretty cool. My one question is… What the hell did they do to the admin pages?

It’s nice but completely different.  Everything is moved around, renamed and just weird. They removed all of the page, post and category ID’s? All I can say is…WTF?
Someone has already written a plugin to help but category ID’s aren’t shown yet. But knowing how many plugins are out there that require a specific ID in order to function, I can’t imagine what made them think it would be a good idea to leave them out.

I’m sure I’ll grow to love it eventually but I personally this change was too drastic. Fortunately all of my plugins still seem to be functional, but  I’ll be waiting  to upgrade any of my other sites until I get used to it.

BannerI got this email from my Hosting Company 1&1 the other day. Now I don’t monitor them every second of every day but can honestly say that in the 4 years I’ve been using them I have not seen any down time on my sites.

In the multitude of forums I browse every day I see a lot of people asking which host they should use or where they can get cheap hosting. well you can get it at 1&1 !
I have two hosting packages with them and they offer a ton of tools you can use for your site. My favorite is the integrated Google Web Master Tools. I’ve run just about every blog and CMS system on their servers with no problems whatsoever.

The other thing I liked were the all the vouchers you get for Ad Words, Yahoo Search Marketing and MS Ad Center, $200 total. If you’re just starting in affiliate marketing and looking to do it on the cheap it’s a great deal. Take the $200 in vouchers, Couple that with 3 months free hosting and two included domains and you’re already $230 ahead of the game. By the time it starts costing you anything at all, you can be up and running and making more than enough co pay for it.

Click the more link so see the features that you get with this package. You can always add features later if you decide you need more, but I doubt you will.

Wordpress Affiliate Shop Number 3

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

Wordpress Affiliate ShopI’ve created yet another in my series of wordpress affiliate shops. I’m not quite sure why I chose flowers for this theme. I don’t promote any flower programs, Of course I don’t promote any tech merchandise either for my other shop. It’s just what came to mind as I was doing it.

This one looks fine so far in IE7 and Firefox but is a little off kilter in IE6. I’m not sure why at this point, It valiated just fine, at least until I add the content but regardless, I’ll fix that later.

It’s done the same as my other two where optional excerpts are used for the product listings and full posts for the descriptions and buy now links. This one only has one category and a few products just to give an idea of how it looks. I’d rather spend my time working on functionality than loading it with product information that means nothing to me.

This one is not widget ready so it’s a little more work, not much, but a little. Maybe I’ll fix that too. Eventually these will all get their own page here, probably after I get the other two I’m working on up and running. Now I just need to figure out what it is I want to use them for.

Wordpress Affiliate Shop

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Wordpress Affiliate ShopSo I’ve made myself another Wordpress Affiliate Shop. This is my second one besides the one I use at dogsrule.us. It is a modified free theme as opposed to the other witch is pretty much custom. It’s probably a pretty ugly hack but it works and looks nice, I think.

Wordpress is so easy to use it should be a staple for any affiliate. Again, this one just uses the “Optional Excerpts” for the products and the full post is used for the detailed description of each. I also used the folding categories plugin widget for the menu.
Gives it a more professional look I think.

All of the content is just newegg items that I’m using for demo purposes. There are no aff links. In fact, most of the links probably don’t work. It’s pretty easily customizable too which is nice if you wanted to use it for something other than tech.
